Saints sweep series with 5-3 win

ST. AUGUSTINE – Ryan Ashworth (2-1) turned in a great performance on the mound as he tossed a complete game and tied his career-high with seven strikeouts as Flagler College defeated Francis Marion University 5-3 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints also swept the first conference series last year, vs. Georgia College. Francis Marion dropped to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Ashworth scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run in tossing his first complete game in 12 starts. He tossed 116 pitches, 81 for strikes. After a shaky first inning, Ashworth retired 23 of the last 27 batters he faced. He allowed four hits and one run in the final eight innings of work.

The Saints took the lead in the fourth inning. Evan Lowe led off with a single to right-center and was sacrificed over to second base by Frankie Martello. Two batters later, Aaron Anderson ripped a base hit to the gap in right-center, which scored Lowe with the go-ahead run.

Flagler added two more in the eighth when Jimmy Peck greeted Francis Marion reliever Christian Umphlett with a home run that just cleared the left field fence.

Arien Seymour (0-1) took the loss for the Patriots. He tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowed five hits and three runs. Seymour walked four batters. Garrett Wilson tossed 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed one hit and an unearned run.

Jason Moore went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, scored two runs and had two runs batted in for the Saints. Ethan Crout hit a double and scored a run.

William Robbins led Francis Marion as he went 3-for-4 with a home run. Steven Cox collected a pair of singles.

Flagler travels to Melbourne on Wednesday (Feb. 21) to take on Florida Tech at 6 p.m. at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
