ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College used a 23-4 run in the second half but couldn't surpass Francis Marion University in a 66-58 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Francis Marion won its fifth game in a row and improved to 18-7 overall and 13-7 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 9-15 overall and 6-14 in the conference.
The Patriots held their largest lead, 50-24, with 16:44 left in the game after a Judah Alexander basket. From that point, the Saints went on its torrid run over 9:18 led by
Chris Williams' six points in the spurt.
Vaughn McCall's 3-pointer with 35 seconds left closed the gap to six (64-58), but the Saints couldn't get any closer.
Detrek Browning scored a game-high 24 points for Francis Marion. Brandon Parker added 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. Kinglsey Nwagboso grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Ryan Davis tallied five assists.
The Patriots shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field in the first half, but wound up shooting a chilly 25.9 percent (7-27) in the second half. Francis Marion forced 22 Flagler turnovers and cashed them in for 27 points.
Cortlin Davis led the Saints with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Damerit Brown added 13 points nine rebounds and three assists.
Austin Howard contributed seven points and five rebounds. Williams finished with six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Flagler wraps up its home schedule on Wednesday (Feb. 21) against Columbus State University at 7:30 p.m. for "Senior Night."
