AMERICUS, Ga. – The Flagler College defense held Georgia Southwestern State University's perimeter game in check as it allowed only three 3-pointers in a 64-53 win Wednesday night in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game at the Storm Dome.
Flagler won its second game in a row to improve to 9-14 overall and 6-13 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern lost its third game in a row and dropped to 12-11 overall and 8-11 in conference play.
The Hurricanes came into the game making an average of 8.5 three-pointers made per game and their three treys tonight was a season-low. It is almost a year to the day, Feb. 15, 2017, when Georgia Southwestern only made two 3-pointers in a 63-53 loss at home to Georgia College.
Vaughn McCall led four Saints in double figures with 17 points.
Chris Williams recorded his team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and he grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The last time these two teams met (Jan. 18), Williams had 11 points and 14 rebounds in an 88-67 romp, which was the last time he had a double-double.
Damerit Brown added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists while
Cortlin Davis chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Saints held the Hurricanes to 33.9 percent (21-62) shooting from the field, which included a frigid 25 percent (8=32) in the second half alone.
Andre Statam led Georgia Southwestern with a game-high 20 points and he grabbed eight rebounds. Dajiion Macklien added 11 points.
The Hurricanes led 32-31 at the half, as McCall sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer, which started a 27-8 run that went all the way to the 6-minute mark in the second half and put the game away
This was the first time since Feb. 13, 2010 when Flagler won in Americus. The Saints won that game 69-63. The Hurricanes won the next four in a row on their home court.
Flagler hosts Francis Marion University on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium. The Saints are one game out of eighth place with three games remaining. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.
