Saints split twinbill with Tars

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College erupted for an eight-run first inning en route to a 10-2 victory over Rollins College in game one, but Rollins earned a split with a 6-3 win in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Flagler is now 6-1 while Rollins leaves with a 3-6 record.

In the opener, the Saints sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and collected seven hits. In fact, Flagler strung together six consecutive hits, including Natalie Murphy's two-run single and RBI doubles from Tatum Morgan and Tracy Caccavale. Maria Kappos collected two hits in the frame and scored a run while driving in another.

That was more than enough for Ally Marcano (3-0) who tossed a one-hitter and allowed two unearned runs. She walked six, but struck out four in the game reduced to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Kappos collected three singles, with a run scored and two runs batted in. Genevieve Mangini hit two singles, scored a run and drove in another. Morgan Murphy also hit two singles with a run scored and one RBI.

Abby Summers (2-4) last one-third of an inning and allowed six hits to go along with eight runs.

Jordan Davis hit a single and stole two bases for the Tars.

In the second game, the Saints fell behind early, 2-0, but a Morgan Murphy hit a solo home run in the second and then a wild pitch scored another run in the third to tie the game.

But Davis hit a single to right field to score Abigail Sexton from third base with the go-ahead run.

Brianne Lint socked a solo home run in a two-run fifth to provide insurance for the Tars.

Summers (3-4) scattered five hits over five innings and struck out four while walking one batter. She allowed both of Flagler's runs. Grace Street earned her first save of the season after pitching a scoreless two innings.

Davis led the Tars, offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and one RBI. Chandler Middlebrook went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Lindsay Gehring hit a single and a double while Sexton went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and she had one RBI.
