McCue shines in opener and then the Saints win slugfest

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College won a pair of games this afternoon and the two games could not have been more different. Flagler got an outstanding performance in the circle from Katlyn McCue (3-0) as she tossed a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 in over the University of West Alabama and then Natalie Murphy hit another walk-off double in an 8-7 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Saturday in the South/Southeast Region Crossover Tournament at Flagler Field.

Flagler is still undefeated at 5-0. West Alabama fell to 3-6 while Embry-Riddle fell to 2-2.

In the opener, McCue retired 13 of the first 14 batters she faced. She struck out seven batters and only allowed four base runners to reach scoring position.

McCue got all of the offense she would need when Natalie Murphy doubled home Genevieve Mangini with the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Insurance came in the sixth inning when Morgan Murphy led off the frame with a double down the left field line and she later scored on a single to right field by Tracy Caccavale.

Mangini finished with a pair of singles and a runs scored for the Saints. Tatum Morgan and Megan Miller each hit a double.

Carleigh Mills (1-3) tossed 5 1/3 innings and surrendered seven hits and two runs. She fanned three batters.

Four different Tigers each collected a single.

In the second game, the Saints jumped ahead of the Eagles 7-0 only to see their lead evaporate in the seventh. Embry-Riddle plated five runs in the top of the frame before Flagler got the walk-off double.

Morgan Murphy hit a grand slam to left-center to stake the Saints to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

In the second inning, back-to-back RBI-singles by Hayley Kirinsky and Jamie Greenwood gave Flagler a 7-0 lead.

Embry-Riddle got two runs back in the fifth before erupting for five in the seventh. B Limon hit a two-run single to center which chased Caccavale, who came in to start the fourth inning in the circle for the Saints. Starter Ally Marcano (2-0) came back to close the door, but after hitting a batter to load the bases, Lisa Hop hit a two-run single to left to tie the game. Marcano was able to get of the inning without any further damage.

Maria Kappos opened the bottom half of the seventh by reaching on an error by the shortstop. Natalie Murphy followed with the double to left-center to end the game.

Marcano worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked three and struck out two to pick up the win.

Kappos had the other base hit for the Saints.

Embry-Riddle reliever Ilona Andringa (1-2) took the loss in relief. She faced the two batters in the seventh and did not retire anyone.
