Nowotny breaks assist record for a match in Flagler’s 9-0 win

ST. AUGUSTINE – Charlene Nowotny broke the single-match record for assists with four, and she added two goals, as Flagler College rolled to a 9-0 win over Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon at Saints Field.

Flagler is undefeated in its last five matches (4-0-1), improved to 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern fell to 2-10-0 overall and 0-6-0 in conference play.

"I am very happy with the performance of the entire squad," said head coach Ashley Martin. "We set targets of keeping a clean sheet and scoring goals and we did both. Now we look forward to a massive game this Saturday against North Georgia."

The Saints tied a program record for assists in a match with 11. The nine goals scored is the most by a Flagler team since Sept. 28, 2016 when Flagler beat Georgia Southwestern by the same score at Saints Field.

Nowotny's four assists broke the previous record of three, which was held by Haley Powers (9/6/13 vs. Barton), Jessica Jagielski (9/26/12 vs. Georgia Southwestern), and Marissa McConnihay (10/21/05 vs. SCAD). It also ties a conference record for most assists in a league match with three others, which was last done in 2007.

Sara Sandberg added two goals to bring her cache to 11 for the season. Annie Habeeb, MC Bell, Lorena Lopez, Concepcion Sanchez, and Mia Pencak added goals.

Ali Ritter and Maria Castorino Mujica each tallied two assists. Habeeb, Myiah Russack-Cradeur, and Concepcion Sanchez all had one assist.

Maddison Lipson recorded one save to earn her second career clean sheet. Hannah Morrone collected five saves for the Lady Canes.

Flagler out-shot Georgia Southwestern 21-1 and held a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints had six corner kicks.

Up next for Flagler is a showdown with No. 13 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia on "St. Johns County Youth Day," Saturday (Oct. 13) at Saints Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
