Sandberg and Nowotny lead Saints to upset win over No. 13 Nighthawks

ST. AUGUSTINE – Sara Sandberg scored two goals and assisted on another while Charlene Nowotny tallied two assists as Flagler College knocked off No. 13 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.

Flagler won its second match in a row to improve to 8-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Peach Belt. It was also the Saints second consecutive victory in the series, which the Nighthawks now own a 9-2-1 advantage. North Georgia had its seven match win streak snapped and dropped to 9-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play. The last time the Nighthawks allowed three or more goals in a match was in their last loss to Lee University on Sept. 6 (3-2).

"The team won today thanks to not only their performance during the 90 minutes, but their application and preparation in the days leading up to the match," said head coach Ashley Martin. "The ladies were fearless and determined to win today. They should feel extremely proud of their efforts."

After North Georgia opened the scoring in the third minute, just 41 seconds later Sandberg scored the equalizer for the Saints. Nowotny broke away down the left sideline and fed a pass through three defenders and the Nighthawks keeper, who was on the ground, punched the pass to Sandberg who had a wide-open goal.

In the 29th minute, it was Sandberg again, scoring her team-leading 13th goal. Nowotny beat her defender and sent a pass forward to a streaking Sandberg for the goal.

Myiah Russack-Cradeur scored the insurance goal for the Saints in the 63rd minute. Sandberg's cross led to the goal.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded three saves for Flagler while Kaitlyn Siberski collected two saves for North Georgia. Siberski had not allowed a goal in her previous six matches.

Flagler out-shot North Georgia 8-7 and held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Nighthawks took the match's four corner kicks. The fouls were evenly dispersed at seven apiece.

Up next for the Saints is a road match against Palm Beach Atlantic University on Wednesday (Oct. 17) at 5 p.m. at West Palm Beach, Florida.
