Saints hold off pesky Braves in five-set win

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Flagler College used a balanced scoring attack to hold off the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Lumbee Bank Court.

Flagler improved to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Raquel Kulak led the Saints with a match-high 19 kills and she added six block assists. Kulak hit .400 for the match with only three errors on 4 swings. Karlie Redfern recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 kills and 13 digs. Logan Garcia added a season-high 11 kills to go along with four total blocks. Morgan Hall had season-highs in kills (10), digs (6) and blocks (4). Tara Savisky registered her fourth double-double of the year with 40 assists and 11 digs. Kayla Norelli paced the defense with 23 digs.

"UNC Pembroke played some great defense and really stretched rallies," said Matt Affolder, Flagler head volleyball coach. "I thought our two freshman Logan and Morgan played confident and strong the entire night. Kayla was locked in on defense and made some great plays, and Raquel played very strong and came up with some big kills in key moments."

Aquia Jones led the Braves with 18 kills while Shannon Skryd came off the bench to record a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Bailee Jones also notched a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs. Anna Heinz corralled a match-high 32 digs.

The match featured 23 ties and nine lead changes.

Flagler visits Francis Marion University tomorrow (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m. at Florence, South Carolina.
