Saints stunned in shootout in quarterfinal match

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and Young Harris College played 110 minutes and they were still tied at 1-all. With the match being a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal, the next step was penalty kicks. The Mountain Lions, on their last attempt, converted to win the shootout 3-2 and advance to the semifinal round.

Young Harris, the No. 6 seed, is now 6-8-1. The Mountain Lions advance to the semifinal round where they will face the No. 7 seed Georgia College. They knocked off the No. 2 seed Lander University in a shootout. Flagler is now 11-3-2 and will now have to wait to see if it can snag an at-large berth to the regional tournament.

Maria Castorino Mujica got the Saints on the board first with her goal in the 32nd minute. Annie Habeeb sent a cross into the box and Mujica headed the ball into the goal.

That score would hold until the 67th minute when the Mountain Lions scored the equalizer. Lucero Robayo sent a cross pass, on the ground across the box to the left side where a streaking Bianey Serrano was able to put the ball past a diving Sarah-Lisa Dubel.

The Saints peppered the Young Harris keeper, Pien Van Kampen, but could not get another ball past her. She tallied eight saves.

In the shootout, Sara Sandberg gave Flagler a quick lead and Baylee Roche missed on her attempt. Robayo scored to tie the shootout at 1-all, but Mujica converted to put Flagler back on top. After a pair of misses by both teams, Lailah Muscat knotted everything up at 2. Habeeb missed on her attempt and that left the fate of the match resting on the shoulders of Britt Verstegen. She put the ball in the back of the net to send Young Harris on.

Dubel finished with five saves for the Saints.

Flagler out-shot Young Harris 15-7 and held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Saints had 14 corner kicks while the Mountain Lions had one. Young Harris committed 18 fouls while Flagler was tagged for 15.
