COLUMBUS, Ga. –
Annie Habeeb's header midway through the first overtime sent Flagler College on to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 2-1 victory over No. 19 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Limestone College Friday afternoon at the Warden Soccer Complex.
Flagler improved to 12-3-2 overall and will take on No. 3 Columbus State University, the host school, at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 11). The winner advances to the regional final (or third round). Limestone ends its season with a 17-3-0 record.
"Today's win certainly wasn't pretty," said head coach
Ashley Martin," but it showed that this team won't give up. We were a little rusty given we hadn't played in almost 10 days, but the players worked through it and came out on top."
Maria Castorino Mujica lobbed a corner kick into the box, which found
Sara Sandberg who headed the ball over to Habeeb, who finished with her own header.
It was Castorino Mujica who got the Saints on the board first with her goal just 43 seconds into the match.
In the fifth minute, Flagler's
Sarah-Lisa Dubel was called for a foul in the box, which setup a penalty kick for Limestone's Holly Rawcliffe. She converted to tie the match.
Most of the first half was played in a driving rain, and the match was halted due to lightning.
Dubel collected two saves for Flagler as did Limestone's Veronica Smeltzer.
Each team had 10 shots with Flagler holding a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had 10 corner kicks and each team was called for nine fouls.
