ORLANDO, Fla. –
Vaughn McCall scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, but it wasn't enough as the University of Central Florida went on to defeat Flagler College 86-69 in a men's basketball exhibition game Monday night at CFE Arena.
McCall, a third-team All-Peach Belt Conference selection last year, did most of his damage in the second half with 14 points. He sank 6-of-9 in the final 20 minutes.
Chris Metzger came off the bench to provide 12 points and five rebounds while
Damerit Brown chipped in with 11 points.
The Saints shot 55.9 percent (19-34) in the second half. Flagler out-rebounded the taller UCF side 36-31.
The returning American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tacko Fall led the Knights with 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field. He blocked four shots. B.J. Taylor added 13 points, six assists, and four rebounds while Ceasar DeJesus came off the bench to provide 12 points and four assists. Aubrey Dawkins tacked on 11 points.
UCF, the preseason favorite to win the AAC, shot a sizzling 61.3 percent (19-31) in the first half and took a 45-27 lead into the half. The Knights forced 19 turnovers and converted those into 27 points.
Flagler hung around and trailed by as few as eight (54-46) with 13:15 left to go in the game after a Metzger basket. But UCF answered with a 17-4 spurt over the next 5:17 to put the game away.
Flagler opens the 2018-19 season on Nov. 9 at the Southeast Region Crossover at Bristol, Tennessee. The Saints will open with the host school, King University, at 7 p.m.
