Flagler sends its seniors off in style with a 3-0 win

ST. AUGUSTINE – For seven Flagler College men's soccer seniors, tonight was their last night to wear the Crimson and Gold. Their fellow teammates sent them off with a convincing 3-0 win over Georgia Southwestern State University Wednesday night at Saints Field.

Prior to the match, Flagler honored its seniors: Mel Broughton, Nemanja Damjanovic, Oscar Davidsson, Samba Diop, Eoin Hyland, Keiron Matthews, and Cameron Silbar.

Flagler improved to 5-8-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won all 11 matches in the series dating back to 2008. Georgia Southwestern lost its third match in a row and fell to 3-9-2 overall and 0-5-1 in conference play.

Diop, one of the seven seniors, scored his first goal of the season to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. He headed in a cross from Joaquin Gutierrez in the 17th minute.

Tryggvi Magnusson converted a penalty kick in the 45th minute to send Flagler into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

Two seniors connected on the final goal as Davidsson knocked in a shot just outside the box in the 53rd minute, off a pass from Diop.

Broughton, another senior, turned in a clean sheet with six saves. It was Broughton's second shutout of the season. Francesco Bazzano tallied six saves for the Hurricanes.

Flagler out-shot Georgia Southwestern 14-10 and held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Saints had seven corner kicks while the Hurricanes had six. Flagler committed 16 of the 27 fouls in the match.

Flagler concludes its regular season on Saturday at Lander University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
