ST. AUGUSTINE –
Oscar Davidsson's goal in the 17
th minute would be the only offense Flagler would need in a 2-0 whitewashing of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.
Flagler takes the lead in the series (since 1996) 12-11-7 and improves to 4-7-1 overall. It was the Saints' first win over their old rivals since Sept. 30, 2009 by the same score and at home. Embry-Riddle lost its fourth match in a row and is winless in its last seven matches (0-6-1). The Eagles dropped to 2-8-1.
In the Saints' first goal,
Sam Coombes found
Joaquin Gutierrez on his right and Gutierrez sent a cross pass into the box where Davidsson finished.
In the 54
th minute,
Henrique Salomao scored the insurance goal when he evaded a couple of defenders and scored.
Mel Broughton recorded his first career clean sheet as he collected three saves. Will Hanisch had three saves for the Eagles.
Flagler out-shot Embry-Riddle 11-8 and held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints took six corner kicks while the Eagles had four. The match featured 35 fouls with Flagler being whistled for 23.
Up next for Flagler is No. 2 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Young Harris College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Saints Field.
