FLORENCE, S.C. –
Vaughn McCall tied his career-high with 30 points to help Flagler College fend off a late Francis Marion University rally to escape with a 75-70 win in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center.
Flagler extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 7-8 overall and 4-7 in the Peach Belt. The Saints snapped a five-game losing streak to the Patriots. Francis Marion falls to 10-6 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
McCall sank 9-of-17 from the field and was 6-for-10 from 3-point range to pace the Saints.
Austin Howard added 14 points while
Jeffercy Jean supplied 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Damerit Brown and
Chris Williams each grabbed 10 rebounds.
Detrek Browning's 3-pointer with 1:27 left to go in the game gave Fran cis Marion a 70-68 lead. However, Flagler closed the game on a 7-0 run, all scored by McCall (3-pointer and four dree throws).
The Saints defense limited the Patriots to just three made 3-pointers when they were averaging 7.9 made per game going into today. The Patriots only shot 16.7 percent (3-18) from long range.
Flagler also out-rebounded Francis Marion 45-33. Fourteen of those rebounds were on the offensive glass which led to 15 second chance points.
Browning, the league's leading scorer at 24.5 points per game, scored 16 of his team-high 27 points in the second half. He made 10-of-23 from the field and was 2-for-6 from 3-point range and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Brandon Parker added 11 points, three assists and three steals. Warren Specht chipped in with nine points.
The three treys by the Patriots was a season-low, along with the shooting percentage from behind the arc.
After starting the season at 8-0, Francis Marion has gone 2-6.
Flagler takes on Columbus State University on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at 7:30 p.m. at Columbus, Georgia.
