DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
Vaughn McCall led five Flagler College players in double figures as he poured in a season-high 27 points in an 86-78 win over the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Flagler snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the Peach Belt. The Saints also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Nighthawks. Flagler's last win in the series was Jan. 28, 2012 when it won 66-60 at Dahlonega. North Georgia had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
After North Georgia scored the first basket, Flagler followed with a 14-2 run over the next 4:23 to blow past the Nighthawks. The Saints never trailed for the remainder of the game and held its largest lead, 55-33, with 15:30 left to go in the game.
The Nighthawks were able to chip away at the deficit and closed the gap to under 10 with 1:48 left to go, but could not get any closer than eight points.
McCall was responsible for scoring 18 of Flagler's 41 points in the first half. He was 8-for-13 in the first half and sank a pair of 3-pointers.
For the game, McCall made 11-of-19 from the field and grabbed five rebounds to go along with three assists.
Damerit Brown added 15 points and nine rebounds while
Jeffercy Jean recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Cortlin Davis provided 13 points, four assists and blocked three shots.
Austin Howard scored 10 points coming off the bench.
Flagler recorded its best shooting percentage of the season as it shot at a 54.5 percent (33-66) clip. The Saints dominated the glass as they out-rebounded the Nighthawks 41-28.
Ebo Smith led North Georgia with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. Shaquan Cantrell added 17 points and Ephraim Tshimanga tacked on 10 points. Lanre Olatunji grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Charles Perry dished out five assists.
After a cold shooting first half, North Georgia scorched the nets in the second half shooting at a 60 percent (21-35) clip.
Flagler returns home to face Georgia Southwestern State University on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
