No. 12 Flagler rallies past North Georgia in overtime

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Charlene Nowotny scored the golden goal just under four minutes into the first overtime period to give No. 12 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College a 3-2 win over the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.

Flagler continues its best start in program history as it raised its record to 8-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Peach Belt. The win also erases a 10-match (0-9-1) winless streak against North Georgia. The Nighthawks lost their second match in a row and fell to 5-3-2 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.

Fio Fustagno, who scored the other two goals for the Saints, set up Nowotny with the pass that led to the golden goal. Nowotny buried the shot in the upper corner of the frame.

Fustagno scored the match's first goal when she booted in a cross from Nowotny in the 29th minute.

The Saints took that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Renee VanHorn scored the equalizer for the Nighthawks in the 53rd minute when she headed in a cross from Olivia Dunphy.

Asa Thorsen fired a shot into the back of the next in the 61st minute to stake North Georgia to a 2-1 lead.

In the final minute of regulation, Fustagno's diving header off a pass from Nowotny beat the UNG keeper to force the overtime session.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded five saves for the Saints while her counterpart, Hannah Goudy, tallied four saves for the Nighthawks.

North Georgia out-shot Flagler 14-9 and held a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Flagler hosts the University of South Carolina Aiken on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. at Saints Field.
