Lander rallies past Flagler in overtime

ST. AUGUSTINE – With just over one minute left to go in the second overtime period, Thibault Chretien booted in a free kick to give Lander University a 3-2 victory over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.

Lander won its second match in a row, and its fourth in its last five matches, to improve to 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 1-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

After a foul was whistled at the top of the box, Chretien took the free kick and hit a low shot, which went by the right side of Flagler's wall, and then went into the bottom right corner of the goal to end the game.

Quam Salami gave the Saints an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 17th and 30th minutes.

Flagler held a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.

Just six and one-half minutes into the second half, Flagler's Keiron Matthews committed a foul in the box and Jordan Skelton was able to convert the penalty kick to get the Bearcats on the board. Matthews was issued a red card and the Saints had to play the remainder of the match one player short.

In the 63rd minute, Sam Lofts knocked in a cross from Chretien for the equalizer.

Lander continued to apply the pressure during regulation taking 13 shots, 10 of which were on goal.

Flagler goalkeeper Iwan Roberts, making his first career start, tallied eight saves in the second half alone. He would finish the match with 12 saves, the most for a Saints keeper since 2012 (Camp Bissell's 13 saves vs. Rollins).

Chretien had a chance in the first overtime, but his shot clanged off the post in the 95th minute. The same thing happened to him in the 108th minute in the second overtime.

Dean Cowdry did not make a save for Lander as he faced a total of six shots; just two were on goal, which were the two goals he allowed.

Lander held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

There were 33 fouls whistled with Flagler receiving 17 infractions.

Flagler returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 23) against Nova Southeastern University. The game will kick-off at 6 p.m. at Saints Field.
