Flagler gets shut out in conference tournament opener

FLORENCE, S.C. – Georgia College, the No. 3 seed, scored early and often en route to a 14-0 win over No. 6 seed Flagler College in the first game of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium. The game was stopped after six and one-half innings due to the mercy rule.

Georgia College improved to 32-13 overall and advances in the winners bracket where it will face the winner of the Lander-USC Aiken game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Flagler had its two-game-winning streak snapped and fell to 28-23. The Saints will play an elimination game tomorrow at 10 a.m. against the loser of the Lander-USC Aiken game.

The Bobcats erupted for three runs in the first inning and never looked back. PBC Player of the Year Brandon Benson started the hit parade for Georgia College with a single up the middle. Logan Mattix followed with a single, and two batters later, Brandon Purcell's base hit to left scored Benson. Clayten Ayers and Nate Schmal followed with RBI singles.

Georgia College tacked three more runs in the second, thanks to a two-run single by Mattix.

Wesley Wommack hit a bases-clearing double in the third to give the Bobcats a 9-0 lead.

Georgia College scored four in the fourth and added one more tally in the sixth.

Of the 24 hits the Bobcats had on the day, only three went for extra bases. Cal Gentry had a double, along with Wommack's, and Schmal hit a triple.

Benson went 4-for-5 with four runs scored while Schmal had four hits, scored a run and drove in another. Mattix and Wommack led the team with three runs batted in apiece.

Brady Walsh (6-2) tossed six scoreless innings and scattered three hits. He fanned five batters.

Ethan Crout, Dylan Jones, Jason Moore and Lorenzo Butler each had a single for the Saints.

Michael Maiocco (9-5) took the loss after he pitched one-plus innings, allowed seven hits and five runs. Luke Cooksey, Nick Martinez, Jordan Doyle and Louis Pugliese pitched in relief.
