FLORENCE, S.C. – Flagler College second baseman
Cole Ondrejka tied a Peach Belt Conference Tournament record with five hits in a 4-3 win over Lander University in an elimination game Thursday morning at Sparrow Stadium.
Flagler improved its record to 29-23 and will advance to another elimination game tomorrow (May 12) at 10 a.m. against the loser of the Georgia College-USC Aiken game. Lander ends its season with a 21-31 record.
Ondrejka (5-for-5, 2RBI, run) hit four singles and one double and joins five other players who had five hits in a game, the last being Josh Haley of UNC Pembroke vs. Armstrong State University just over six years ago to the date (May 10, 2011).
With the score tied at 3-all going into the home-half of the ninth, Ondrejka collected his fifth hit with a one-out single to right. Two batters later,
Jake Hathaway reached on a fielding error by Lander second baseman Colton Yeager, and Ondrejka was able to scoot to third base on a throwing error by Yeager. Hathaway, shortly thereafter, trotted to second on defensive indifference.
Jason Moore drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.
Ja'Kobi Dasher hit a grounder toward short, but Mason Dodd, the Lander third baseman cut in front and his throw to first base was in the dirt and could not be scooped in time and Ondrejka scored the winning run.
The Bearcats committed six errors on the day which lead to two unearned runs.
Ondrejka drove in both of Flagler's runs early runs on singles, including the one in the fifth inning which broke up a 1-all tie.
In the seventh, Alec Dowell greeted Flagler reliever
Ryan Ashworth with a two-run single to push the Bearcats ahead for the first time, 3-2.
The Saints tied the game in the seventh with the help of another Ondrejka single. With
Ethan Crout at second and one out, Ondrejka singled through the hole on the right side of the infield, but right fielder Carson Jones bobbled the ball and Crout scored the tying run.
Ethan Jones (3-0), Flagler's fourth pitcher of the day, closed the game and tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to register the win. He fanned three batters, which tied his season high.
Cooper Wallace started and scattered seven hits over six innings. He allowed three runs.
Dante Pagano followed Ashworth.
Dasher had a pair of singles for the Saints. Moore hit a double.
Robbie Hoyt (3-6) took the loss for the Bearcats. He tossed the last 2 1.3 innings, allowed two hits and one unearned run. Colton Rogers started and surrendered 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Dowell went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and had three runs batted in for Lander. Alex Conaway collected two singles.
