Conley’s double helps Saints to split with Falcons

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Mackenzie Conley drove in the game-winning run on a double in the sixth inning to lift Flagler College to a 3-2 win over the University of Montevallo in the first game of Sunday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. Montevallo broke Flagler's nine-game win streak with a 7-6 win in the second game.
 
The Saints moved their overall mark to 31-18 and 14-6 in the Peach Belt. The Falcons are 19-19 overall and 8-9 in conference play after the split.
 
Playing from a 2-1 deficit during the fifth inning, Maria Kappos blasted a solo home run to left field. In the sixth, Conley drove in the eventual game-winning run on a double to left-center to score Alli-Ann Bigale.
 
In the bottom of the first, Whitney Woodard led off with a walk and stole second base. Natalie Murphy drove Woodard in on a single up the middle for the game's first run.
 
The Falcons claimed a 2-1 lead in the third. Lauren Van Steenwyk and Darbi Duke led off with back-to-back singles. Lady Sara Federico doubled home the pair. Montevallo threatened for more with the bases loaded, but Ally Marcano struck out Holly LaForce to end the inning.
 
Natalie Murphy collected a team-high two hits for the Saints.
 
Kelsey Vining and Van Steenwyk each had a pair of singles for the Falcons.
 
Marcano (21-5) broke the Flagler single-season record for wins. She allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four batters.
 
Abbey Pratt (8-12) suffered the loss for Montevallo. Pratt surrendered three runs on five hits. She walked three and fanned five.
 
In the second game, the Falcons jumped out to a 5-1 advantage after three innings.  Marisa Sosa had a run-scoring double in the second and Vining belted a two-run shot to right-center in the third.
 
Flagler scratched a run across in the home half of the third when Natalie Murphy singled home Kappos.
 
Montevallo added a run in the top of the fifth inning when Mariel Bertossi doubled home a run, but the Saints stormed back in the bottom half to tie the game, 6-6. The first three batters reached and Conley smacked a grand slam to left field. Maddy Murphy later singled up the middle to send to game-tying run home.
 
Vining picked up her third RBI of the contest in the sixth when she singled home Haley Barnett, which stood up to be the game-winning run.
 
Natalie Murphy matched her performance in the first game with two singles.
 
Vining, Van Steenwyk, Bertossie and Dylan Bailey each had two hits for the Falcons.
 
Marcano (21-6) suffered the loss in relief. She allowed one run on one hit over 2.1 innings. Katelynn Smith, Flagler's starter, surrendered three runs on four hits during her 1.1 innings and Callie Reed gave up three runs on five hits. Reed threw 3.1 innings.
 
Pratt (9-12) earned the win after coming into the game during the fifth inning. She fired 2.2 scoreless innings and only surrendered one hit. 
 
The Saints will welcome Georgia College to Flagler Field on Friday (April 14) for a conference doubleheader.
