Flagler escapes with 2-1 victory to take series

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Sean Lawlor's run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning was just enough for Flagler College to edge Armstrong State University 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Flagler won the series 2-1 and improved to 24-16 overall as well as 12-6 in the Peach Belt. Armstrong State fell to 16-20 overall and 1-14 in conference play.

Ja'Kobi Dasher drew a one-out walk from Armstrong starter Matt Meeks (2-4). Meeks also walked the next batter, Lorenzo Butler. Nathan Ward came out of the bull pen to relieve Ward, but threw a wild pitch which allowed both runners to move up a base. Lawlor singled up the middle, which scored Dasher with the go-ahead run, but Butler was thrown out at home trying to score an insurance run.

Luke Cooksey (3-1), who was working in his second inning of relief in the bottom of the ninth, allowed a lead-off single, but that runner was erased on a ground out. However, Ryan Patterson advanced to second on a passed ball. After Cooksey struck out the next batter, he uncorked a wild pitch to put the game-tying run just 90 feet away. He got Zack Goble to pop out to second base to end the game.

Lawlor went 2-for-4 with a double and one run batted in. Dasher hit two singles and scored a run. Dylan Jones hit his 26th double of the season which ties a Flagler record, held by Chris Barnwell (2001), and a PBC record (Kyle Catrett of UNF in 2000 and Chris Grady of Georgia College in 1996).

Cooksey tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed one hit and he struck out a batter. Cooper Wallace started and tossed 7 2/3 innings. He surrendered three hits and one unearned run. Wallace fanned four and walked three.

Meeks was the hard-luck loser for the Pirates. He tossed 8 1/3 innings, scattered seven hits, allowed two runs, walked two and fanned four. Meeks induced 11 fly outs and eight ground outs.

Mike Warren hit a double and scored a run for Armstrong.

Flagler plays host to Florida Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field on "Ashley Daniel Night."
