ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College senior center fielder
Dylan Jones celebrated his 22
nd birthday tonight in style with a three-run home run and 6-5 victory over Florida Tech in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field on "Ashley Daniel Night."
Flagler improved to 25-16 overall and it swept the two-game series against Florida Tech. The Panthers had their three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 21-14.
The Saints took an early 5-0 lead only to see the Panthers rally and tie the game in the seventh on a three-run blast off the bat of Ryan Sinzenich that hit the top of the roof of the shed behind the left field wall.
Flagler finally got to Florida Tech reliever Jake Lane (0-1) in the bottom of the eighth. He had retired 14-of-the-15 batters he faced since entering the game in the third.
Igor Baez led off with a single to left-center and advanced to second when
Jason Moore's grounder to third baseman Reid Neal was mishandled. In came Luke Lorah for the Panthers. He allowed an infield single to
Jake Hathaway, the first and only batter he faced. The ball was headed up the middle when both middle infielders dove to stop the ball. Brett Porter entered the game for Florida Tech and struck out the first batter. But on a 3-1 count to
Lorenzo Butler, Porter hit Butler to force in the go-ahead run. Porter got an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.
The Panthers went down in order in the top of the ninth against
Ethan Jones (1-0) who was in his second inning of work. Jones retired all six batters he faced to earn the victory.
Jones finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted in. He hit a three-run shot over the right field wall in the third inning.
Ethan Crout collected two singles and Baez singled twice, scored a run and drove in another.
Lane was the hard-luck loser for the Panthers. He tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowed two hits and one run. Lane fanned two and retired 10-of-the-17 batters he faced on groundouts.
Dan Szpik singled twice and scored a run for the Florida Tech.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play on Friday (April 14) against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field. This is the final homestand for the Saints this season.
