ST. AUGUSTINE –
Igor Baez collected three singles as Flagler College suffered a 6-1 loss to Valdosta State University in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening on "Bill Abare Day" at Drysdale Field. The game was delayed one-hour and 52 minutes due to a lightning delay.
Valdosta State snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 22-13. Flagler fell to 22-15.
Before the game, the department of athletics honored its retiring college president, Dr. William T. Abare, Jr., and his family, with gifts for his years of service to the school and its athletics programs.

The Blazers scored one run in each of the first three innings and took a 3-1 lead into the lightning delay after three complete.
Valdosta State broke a 1-all tie in the second. Chipper Andzel hit a lead-off single to center and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. He scored on BJ White's sacrifice fly to right field.
After the delay, White belted a two-run home run to right field to give the Blazers a 5-1 lead. White finished the day 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
That is all Cooper Cain (2-0), Valdosta State's first reliever, would need. He took the mound after the delay and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four. The Blazers used five pitchers.
Kendall Herron, Luke Suchon and Tyler Homer each had two hits for the Blazers.
Louis Pugliese (0-2) started and tossed three innings to pick up the loss. He surrendered five hits and two earned runs. Pugliese walked a batter, struck out two, but had three wild pitches. The Saints used six pitchers in the game.
The Saints scored their only run in the bottom of the first.
Dylan Jones hit a ringing single to right-center and took third on Baez' grounder into right field.
Jake Hathaway lifted a fly ball down the left field line, deep enough to score Jones from third base to tie the game.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Friday with a 3 p.m. game at Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia. This will be the first of a three-game set.
