Saints out-slug Pirates, 17-8

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Flagler College erupted for 14 runs in the middle three innings on its way to a 17-8 triumph over Armstrong State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Flagler improved to 23-15 overall and 11-5 in the Peach Belt. Armstrong State fell to 15-19 overall and 0-12 in conference play. The Pirates are 3-16 in their last 19 games.

The Saints trailed 4-1 going into the top of the fourth when they reeled off five runs. Igor Baez did the bulk of the damage with a three-run home run to left to give Flagler a 6-4 lead.

After the Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Saints erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth. Flagler sent 11 men to the plate and banged out four hits and four batters drew a walk. Jake Hathaway and Cole Ondrejka hit back-to-back two-run singles.

Flagler tacked on three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Dylan Jones went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Hathaway collected three singles, scored a run and drove in two more. Ja'Kobi Dasher also had three singles and he scored a run. Baez finished with five RBI.

Michael Maiocco (8-2) tossed five innings to earn the win. He scattered nine hits, allowed five earned runs and walked three. Ethan Jones and MacLain Larson closed out the game.

Seven Flagler batters were hit by a pitch and Lorenzo Butler was th lone player to be hit more than once (two times).

Mike Warren led the Pirates as he went 3-for-6 with a double, a run scored and one RBI. Chandler Corley hit three singles, scored a run and drove in another.

Sam Goberdhan (3-4) lasted 4 2/3 innings and he surrendered 10 earned runs on 10 hits. He walked six and fanned four. He was the first of six pitchers used in the game.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Pirate Field.
