Saints storm past Lady ‘Canes in sweep

AMERICUS, Ga. – Maria Kappos singled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning as Flagler College defeated Georgia Southwestern State University, 4-3, in the first game of Saturday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Lady Canes Field. Flagler then defeated Georgia Southwestern 10-2, in five innings, in game two.
 
The Saints extended their winning streak to eight games and improved to 30-17 overall as well as 13-5 in the Peach Belt. The Lady 'Canes overall mark fell to 17-25 and 4-10 in the conference.
 
In the top of the eighth of the first contest, Garland Evans tripled up the middle with two outs. Kappos singled to right-center to drive in the eventual game-winning run in extra innings.
 
Flagler owned a 3-0 lead after three innings. Whitney Woodard led off the game with double and stole third. Mackenzie Conley drove Woodard in on a sacrifice fly to center.
 
Woodard doubled for a second time in the third to drive in a run. Natalie Murphy added an RBI single during the inning.

Georgia Southwestern tied the game in the home half of the seventh when Allee Denney scored Hayley Tierce on a ground out.
 
Woodard went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk. Kappos and Megan Miller each tallied two hits.
 
Davis, Martin and Sabrina Sieber each collected two hits for the Lady 'Canes to account for six of the team's nine hits.
 
Callie Reed (3-4) earned the win after tossing 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. She allowed a run on six hits, but did not walk anyone. Ally Marcano held Georgia Southwestern to two runs on three hits. Marcano issued six walks and struck out two over 5.1 frames. She picked up her first save of the season after re-entering the game in the bottom of the eighth and tossed a scoreless frame.
 
Shannon Gibson (6-9) suffered the loss after she surrendered four runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits through eight innings.
 
During the second game, the Saints exploded for eight runs during the first two innings. Woodard led off the contest with a solo homer and Conley followed with a two-run blast. In the second, Conley and Natalie Murphy smacked back-to-back run-scoring doubles. 
 
Martin tripled and scored on a single by Sabrina Sieber for Georgia Southwestern in the second for team's first score.
 
Genevieve Mangini tripled and scored in the fifth for the Saints' 10th run.

Kaley Sikes belted a solo homer in the home half to make the score 10-2, but the Lady 'Canes did not get any closer.
 
Natalie Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Conley scored twice and drove in four runs on two hits, including a homer.
 
Mikela Barlow had a team-high two singles for the Georgia Southwestern.
 
Katelynn Smith (7-7) earned the win and did not issue a walk while she fanned three. Smith allowed two runs on eight hits through five innings.
 
Brittany Childs (8-9) lasted just 1.1 innings after she surrendered seven runs on eight hits. Sikes went 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and gave up three runs on four hits.
 
The Saints will head to Winter Park, Florida to face Rollins College on April 4 at 5 p.m.
