YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –
Maria Kappos' bases-clearing double in the fifth inning of the second game secured a doubleheader sweep for Flagler College over Young Harris College on Sunday afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field. Flagler defeated Young Harris, 7-1, in the first game and took the second contest by a 5-1 final in its Peach Belt Conference opener.
The Saints improved their overall record to 14-11. The Mountain Lions fell to 14-4 overall and are 0-4 in conference play.
Whitney Woodard stole three bases during the first game, increasing her season total to 20 which leads the conference.
Flagler and Young Harris were tied at one after four innings of play in the second game when the Saints put three on the board in the fifth. Kappos cashed in on a bases loaded opportunity to put Flagler in front for good.
Mackenzie Conley and
Garland Evans each singled in front of
Morgan Murphy who drew a two-out walk, her second free pass of the game. She walked in the tying run in the fourth. Kappos doubled to left field to clear the bases, picking up two runs batted in as
Morgan Murphy scored on a fielding error by the Young Harris left fielder.
Alli-Ann Bigale put the exclamation point on the day with a solo shot in the sixth frame, her second of the season.
Young Harris got its lone run in the second inning thanks to a pair of singles and two batters who were hit by a pitch. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases for Kelsey Nix who was hit by a pitch forcing in Sara Alderman.
Hannah Harrison picked up her seventh double of the season for the Mountain Lions during her two-hit game in the second contest. Aubrey Crowell doubled during the first game.
Katelyn Smith (3-5) went the distance and allowed just one run on five hits. She struck out three. Nikkie Kovalsky (7-3) surrendered five runs on 11 hits and was tagged with the loss.
Conley led the way offensively in the second game with three hits. She had four on the day and scored twice.
Maddy Murphy, Evans and Kappos each had two base hits as part of a 13-hit performance.
In the early game, Flagler pulled away from Young Harris scoring two runs in the first and three in the third. Woodard walked and Bigale hit a single before an out was recorded in the game. The pair later scored without the benefit of a hit. Woodard crossed home on a fielding error by the catcher and Bigale tallied the second run on a sacrifice fly by
Natalie Murphy.
In the third, Evans singled to the pitcher which allowed Conley to come in. The Saints continued to play small ball as
Morgan Murphy drove in
Maddy Murphy on a sacrifice bunt and then took advantage of another defensive mishap when Evans scored on a throwing error following a steal of third.
Natalie Murphy lead off the fifth with a home run and finished two RBI in the game.
Maddy Murphy had a team-high two hits in the game and Woodard hit a double.
Ally Marcano (11-3) held the Mountain Lions scoreless over the first five innings. The only run she allowed came in the sixth. Murphy Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Harrison, who walked earlier. Marcano went the distance and allowed five hits. She struck out four hitters and walked two.
Jeanie Perrucci (7-1) suffered her first loss of the season for Young Harris. She tossed two-plus innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Crowell collected two hits for the Mountain Lions.
The Saints return to St. Augustine to host the University of Mount Olive at Flagler Field on Tuesday (March 7) at 5 p.m.
