Flagler relishes in its sweep of Mount Olive

ST. AUGUSTINE – Mackenzie Conley went 3-for-6 with a home run and had six runs batted in to help lead Flagler College to a sweep of the University of Mount Olive, 6-2 and 9-1, in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Flagler Field Tuesday night.

Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 16-11. Mount Olive fell to 12-14 overall.

In the opener, Conley capped a three-run third inning with a two-run double to second base. She hit a grounder that nearly went up the middle, but the Mount Olive second baseman was able to get a glove on the ball to keep it from going too far, but not enough for the runs to score.

In the fifth, Conley belted a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left-center to give the Saints a 5-0 lead. She finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Ally Marcano (12-3) scattered five hits and allowed two runs in seven innings of work. She fanned seven and issued one walk. Marcano retired 14-of-the-first-16 batters she faced.

Kayla Allen hit a two-run double for the Trojans in the sixth to break-up the shutout.

Megan Miller collected two singles, stole a base and scored two runs.

Emily Chaisson (7-3) surrendered eight hits and five earned runs to pick up the loss. She walked two and struck out one batter.

Karen Foley collected two singles for Mount Olive, a member of Conference Carolinas.

In game two, Maria Kappos hit a two-run double to right-center to break-up a 1-all tie in the second inning. Two batters later, Whitney Woodard hit a sharp grounder just to the left of the Mount Olive shortstop and the ball skipped all the way to the wall scoring Kappos. Woodard scored on a wild pitch and the Saints took a 5-1 lead.

Flagler added one more in the third and tacked on three more in the fourth.

Mount Olive had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fifth, but Flagler starter Callie Reed (1-2) took care of the last two outs by herself as she got a batter to pop out to her and the next batter hit a grounder back to Reed to end the game via the mercy rule.

Reed tossed the five innings, scattered six hits and allowed one run. She walked one and fanned three.

Natalie Murphy singled twice and scored a run for the Saints. Woodard scored two runs and drove in two more. She also stole two bases.

Caitlin Ewers (2-2) started for Mount Olive and tossed two-plus innings. She allowed six runs on six hits. Foley tossed the last two and allowed two hits and three runs. She walked four batters.

Anna Ingram singled twice and drove in a run.

Flagler hosts Tusculum College on Thursday (March 9) at a special time, 11 a.m., as it is "Education Day" at Flagler Field.
