Saints propelled by 10-run inning in sweep of Lady Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Maria Kappos smacked a game-winning grand slam during a 10-run seventh inning as Flagler College defeated Columbus State University, 11-5, in the first game of Friday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Cougar Field. Flagler shut out Columbus State, 2-0, in the second game.

The Saints improved their overall mark to 28-17 and 11-5 in the Peach Belt. The Lady Cougars fell to 22-16-1 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

The 10-run seventh tied the record for the most runs scored in an inning in the history of the program. The last time the Saints scored 10 runs in an inning came against Armstrong State University on March 26, 2011.

Whitney Woodard drove in the first run with a single down the left field line to score Kappos. Morgan Murphy's single to center scored Mackenzie Conley to pull the Saints even with Columbus State. Kappos put Flagler in front, 9-4, with a grand slam to left-center. Alli-Ann Bigale capped the record-tying inning with a two-run double.

Bigale tallied three hits for Flagler.

Kaleigh Briant and Elizabeth Perdue hit back-to-back run scoring singles in the first.

Perdue struck again with a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Lady Cougars lead to 5-0. She went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Woodard broke Flagler's single-season stolen base record with her 34th steal of the year in the seventh. Woodard, Conley and Morgan Murphy each had two hits for the Saints.

Callie Reed (2-4) came into the contest in the fifth inning in relief of Ally Marcano. Reed tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win and allowed three hits. Marcano surrendered five runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. She issued five walks and struck out five.

Harley Dawson (4-2) suffered the loss for Columbus State. She entered the game with one out in the seventh and gave up eight runs on six hits. Darby Demarest was the Lady Cougars' starter and she gave up three runs on seven hits.

During the first inning of the second game, Conley blasted a two-out solo shot to center field to account for the only run through the four frames. In the fifth, Garland Evans laced a leadoff single into right field and stole second base. Woodard sent Evans home on a single up the middle to extend to advantage to 2-0.

Maddy Murphy hit a double in the top of the second.

Kia Smith collected a game-high two hits for the Lady Cougars, including a double.
