ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
Mackenzie Conley ended a marathon contest with a run-scoring single in the 12
th inning to propel Flagler College to a 3-2 win over the University of North Carolina Pembroke in the second game of Sunday's Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader at Flagler Field. Flagler shut UNC Pembroke out, 1-0, in the first game.
The Saints improved their overall record to 26-17 and Peach Belt mark to 9-5. The Braves fell to 17-22 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
During the 12
th frame of the second game,
Megan Miller led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Whitney Woodard. Conley drove her in on a bouncer up the middle.
Flagler broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when
Morgan Murphy singled in a pair.
The Braves evened the score in the sixth. Rendi Wetherington and Jamie Johnson singled to put runners on the corners. Taylor Gerhart knocked Wetherington in on a hit. Johnson later scored the tying run on an error.
Both teams were held scoreless over the next five innings.
Ally Marcano (20-5) earned the win out of the bullpen. She only allowed one hit over 3.2 scoreless frames and tied the single-season record for wins.
Callie Reed threw 5.1 innings as the starter and surrendered two runs on six hits. She did not give up a run through the first five frames.
Katelynn Smith took over for Reed in the sixth and kept the Braves off the scoreboard for three innings. She allowed three hits.
Malerie Leviner (5-11) suffered the loss. She allowed two runs in the fourth but nothing else until an unearned score in the 12
th inning.
Woodard stole her 33
rd base on the year to tie the Flagler single-season record.
During the early contest,
Alli-Ann Bigale drove in the game's only run in the first. Woodard led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Bigale pushed a bunt past the charging shortstop to score Woodard.
Senior outfielder
Maddy Murphy established a new Flagler career-record with her 33
rd double.
Woodard went 2-for-3 and stole a base. Bigale tallied two singles as the pair accounted for four of Flagler's eight hits.
Marcano tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out eight batters.
Abbey Walters (9-8) surrendered one run on eight hits and suffered the loss. She did not issue a walk and struck out two over six frames.
Jamie Johnson and Toni Nelson had the only two hits for the Braves.
The Saints will travel to Columbus, Georgia to face Columbus State University on Friday (March 31) at 3 p.m.
