ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
Tatum Morgan's first home run of the season came at the most opportune time as it lifted Flagler College to a 3-2 win over Francis Marion University in the second game of Saturday's Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader at Flagler Field. Flagler defeated Francis Marion in the first game, 4-3.
The Saints improved to 24-17 overall and 7-5 in the PBC. The Patriots fell to 22-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
In the second game, Francis Marion jumped on Flagler with a two-run first inning on a passed ball and an error. Flagler responded in the third to tie the contest when
Mackenzie Conley cracked a two-run double to right-center.
Both teams remained scoreless over the next three innings.
Katelynn Smith (5-7) tossed a flawless seventh with three groundouts. In the home half, Morgan led off with a game-winning homer.
Smith did not allow an earned run and held the Patriots scoreless after the first inning. She allowed four hits, struck out four batters and did not issue a walk to earn the win.
Samantha Wroblewski (8-3) suffered the loss. She gave up three runs on eight hits during six innings.
Whitney Woodard singled twice and scored a run. Morgan tallied two hits.
Rayni Newman hit a pair of doubles and scored a run.
During the early game, a pair of two-run homers put the Saints in front of the Patriots, 4-0, after three innings.
Morgan Murphy blasted a shot to center in the second and Conley smacked her team-leading ninth homer of the year to left-center in the third.
Francis Marion was shut out through the first five innings, but climbed within one run of Flagler in the final two frames. Jennie Polak singled in a run in the sixth and Mikala Barnhart drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead in half, 4-2.
In the seventh, Newman belted a one-out solo shot to center, but Flagler's
Callie Reed retired the next two hitters to close out the game.
Reed picked up her first save of the season after she allowed one run over 1.2 innings. She surrendered just one hit and struck out two.
Ally Marcano (18-5) tossed 5.1 frames and gave up two runs on six hits in her win. Marcano fanned four hitters.
Flagler plated four runs on five hits against Sydney Holland (10-9). Holland took the loss and struck out three batters over six innings.
Natalie Murphy collected two singles for the Saints.
Newman went 3-for-4 with a home run and scored two runs. Taylor Johnson tallied two hits and a walk.
Flagler will welcome the University of North Carolina Pembroke to Flagler Field for a pair of games tomorrow (March 26) at 12 p.m.
