ST. AUGUSTINE –No. 24 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College scored five runs in the third inning and six in the seventh to defeat the University of Montevallo 12-8 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 19-9 overall and 7-2 in the Peach Belt. The Saints took the series, 2-1. Montevallo drops to 13-14 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Already leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning,
Jason Moore belted a three-run home run to left and the next batter,
Igor Baez, blasted another to left-center.
But the Saints needed a six-run seventh for insurance. Leading 6-3, Flagler would send 12 men to the plate. There were only two hits in the inning.
Cole Ondrejka hit a two-run double and
Ja'Kobi Dasher followed with a two-run single. There were four walks and three batters were hit by a pitch.
Montevallo made it interesting with a five-run ninth. Matthew Furuto hammered the first pitch he saw of the at bat off
Luke Cooksey and deposited the ball over the fence, just to the left of the center field batter's eye.
Cooper Wallace (5-1) earned the win on the hill for the Saints. He scattered four hits, allowed two runs, struck out six and walked two. Cooksey and
Dante Pagano followed.
Moore went 1-for-4 with the home run. He knocked in four and scored two runs.
Dylan Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs. Ondrejka went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and he scored a run. Dasher finished with two singles, two RBI and a run scored while
Ethan Crout singled twice and scored a run.
Justin Whitely (2-2) was the starter for Montevallo, which used six pitchers in all. Whitley lasted three innings and he allowed four hits and five runs.
Dom DeVille went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for the Falcons. Sebastian Samuels went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and one more driven in. Furuto had two hits, including the homer, four RBI and two runs scored.
Flagler hosts the defending national champions, No. 6 Nova Southeastern University, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
