Ondrejka’s two hits and two RBI leads No. 24 Flagler to victory

ST. AUGUSTINE – Cole Ondrejka knocked in two runs on two hits while Michael Maiocco recorded his sixth win on the mound to lead No. 24 Flagler College to a 4-1 victory over the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 18-8 overall and 6-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints are perfect on Friday this season as they have won all seven games. Montevallo fell to 12-13 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Flagler broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Ondrejka hit a tailor-made double play grounder to shortstop, but Collin Dupree took his eye off the ball and it skidded into the outfield. Jason Moore scored from third base.

The Saints added an insurance run in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on first, Dylan Jones hit a double to right-center. That chased Montevallo starter Jamison Roney (2-2) from the game. Colton Nussel came on in relief and on his second pitch thrown; he uncorked a wild pitch scoring David Drysdale from third.

That's all Maiocco (6-1) would need as he tossed eight-plus innings, scattered seven hits, allowed one run and fanned five. Luke Cooksey closed out the ninth by retiring all three batters he faced, two by strikeouts, to earn his fifth save.

Back-to-back run-scoring singles by Ondrejka and Ja'Kobi Dasher in the eighth helped preserve the lead.

Igor Baez collected two singles for the Saints.

Roney took the hard-luck loss as he lasted 6 2/3 innings and he tossed 126 pitches. He allowed only four hits and two runs. Roney walked two and struck out seven. The Falcons used five different pitchers.

Chad Wagner singled twice for Montevallo.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (March 18) at 2 p.m. on "Law Enforcement Day."
