Saints swept by the Pacers

AIKEN, S.C. – Sydney Murphy blasted a three-run game-ending home run in the first contest of Tuesday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at J.H. Satcher Field to propel University of South Carolina Aiken to a 4-2 win over Flagler College in 10 innings. USC Aiken topped Flagler in the second contest, 2-0.

The Saints fell to 19-14 overall and 2-2 in the PBC. The Pacers improved their overall mark to 14-8-1 and 3-3 in conference play.

USC Aiken threatened in the bottom of the 10th after Julianne Leduc and Leah Boghosian hit back-to-back singles with one out. Murphy's three-run shot lifted the Pacers to victory. She had two of the team's six hits

The Saints' run in the first was the game's only score through six innings. Mackenzie Conley drew a walk and was advanced to second on a base hit by Maddy Murphy. Natalie Murphy drove Conley home on a single to left field.

The Pacers only had two hits entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Ally Marcano recorded the first two outs for the Saints, but Hayley Elkins belted a home run to right-center to tie the game, 1-1, and force extra innings.

After two scoreless frames, Flagler broke through in the 10th. Whitney Woodard hit a one-out double into left field. Alli-Ann Bigale drove Woodard home on a single to center to give the Saints a 2-1 lead before USC Aiken answered in the home half.

Marcano (15-4) dazzled for the Saints in the circle through the first six innings and kept the Pacers off the scoreboard, but suffered the loss. The freshman racked up 14 strikeouts to increase her season total to 145 which ranks second nationally in NCAA Division II.

Woodard went 3-for-5 and scored a run from the leadoff spot. Bigale and Natalie Murphy each tallied two hits.

Lyndie Dorgan (3-0) earned the win for USC Aiken. She surrendered two runs on 10 hits over 10 innings. Dorgan got 17 ground outs and eight fly outs.

USC Aiken edged Flagler in game two where hits and runs were at a premium.

During the first inning, the Pacers put runners on first and third after a walk by Murphy and a single by Chandler Terrapin. Hannah Price grounded out to third which allowed Murphy to score.

Murphy added an RBI single in the fifth for insurance.

Chandler Terrapin (5-4) tossed a three-hit shutout and retired 13 of the last 16 hitters.
