Saints split a pair against No. 3 Nighthawks

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Ally Marcano held the No. 3 (NFCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia to one run as Flagler College won the first game of Thursday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, 2-1, at Flagler Field. North Georgia shut Flagler out in the second game, 4-0.

The Saints snapped a six-game losing streak against the Nighthawks. The last time they defeated a team ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation was on April 13, 2013 when Flagler topped Armstrong State University, 8-7.

Flagler moved its overall record to 20-15 and owns a 3-3 mark in conference play. North Georgia finished the day 23-7 overall and 3-2 in the PBC.

All of the scoring in the early game of the doubleheader came in the first inning. Stephanie Hartness drew a one-out walk in the top half and later scored on a single by Kaylan Anthony, but the Saints answered to take a 2-1 lead. Whitney Woodard walked and advanced to second on a single by Alli-Ann Bigale. Maddy Murphy moved the pair up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Natalie Murphy drove a two-out double down the left-field line to send Woodard and Bigale home.

That is all the offense both sides produced as Marcano and Kylee Smith (13-3) did not allow run the remainder of the game.

Marcano (16-4) earned the win and allowed just one run on four hits. She walked two and struck out eight to increase her season total to 153, which ranks second in the country. Marcano retired 14-of-the-last-15 batters she faced.

Smith suffered the loss for North Georgia. She allowed just two runs on two hits and fanned nine hitters. The only two hits Smith surrendered came in the first frame and she retired the final 16 hitters.

In the latter game, both teams remained scoreless through the first four innings.

The Nighthawks broke through in the sixth with a pair of runs. Pinch runner Hannah McSwain advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaycie Oakley. She scored the game's first run on back-to-back wild pitches. Sydney Sprague's solo shot to left field put North Georgia up 2-0.

The Nighthawks added an insurance run in the sixth on back-to-back fielding errors and another in the seventh on an RBI single by Alishia Frierson.

Amber Johns (4-1) fired 6.1 scoreless frames to secure the win. She allowed three hits and struck out seven. Smith picked up her second save of the season after two-thirds of an inning to close out the game.

Callie Reed (1-4) allowed two runs on just two hits through 4.2 innings. Katelyn Smith tossed the final 2.1 frames and yielded one earned run on three hits.

The Saints will hit the road to take on Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina on Saturday (March 18) at 2 p.m.
