Kappos’ game-winning hit secures doubleheader sweep

DUE WEST, S.C. – Maria Kappos delivered the game-winning run with a single in the eighth inning as Flagler College defeated Erskine College, 5-4, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at the Erskine Softball Complex. Flagler topped Erskine, 2-0, in the first game.
 
Flagler improved its overall record to 19-12 and Erskine fell to 6-12 overall.

Kappos went 4-for-7 with a double and four stolen bases in the doubleheader.
 
In the second game, Natalie Murphy was placed on second base in the eighth as per tiebreaker rules. Morgan Murphy advanced her to third base on a sacrifice bunt and Kappos drove her in with a single up the middle for a 5-4 lead. Ally Marcano (15-3) struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning.
 
Trailing 1-0, the Saints roared back with four runs in the top of the fifth. Kappos led off with a double and scored on a hit by Mackenzie Conley. Whitney Woodard, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch and Maddy Murphy drove in Jaclyn Mijuskovic on a sacrifice fly. Natalie Murphy capped the scoring with an RBI single.
 
Erskine plated two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the contest. Brittany Rhinehardt sent Jill Sprague home on a single. Rhinehardt came in to score later on a sacrifice bunt by Reagan Davis. Sydney Smith opened the sixth with a double and later scored.
 
Kappos collected three hits during the game and Natalie Murphy tallied two.
 
Marcano earned her second win of the day after coming in for Callie Reed in the fifth inning. Marcano tossed 3.2 frames, struck out five hitters and allowed one run on two hits. Reed surrendered three runs on three hits over her 4.1 innings. She also struck out five.
 
Erskine used four pitchers and Sheridan Butcher (0-1) was tagged with the loss. She tossed 3.1 frames and allowed the game-winning run in the eighth. She allowed just two hits. Sydney Davis fired two hitless innings as Erskine's starter.
 
In the first game, Conley provided the only run through the first six innings with a two-out homer in the top of the first.
 
With two outs in the seventh, Flagler was able to pick up an insurance run. Morgan Murphy and Kappos provided the spark with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. A double steal scored Morgan Murphy for a 2-0 lead.
 
Morgan Murphy tallied a team-high two hits for the Saints. Davis had two of the Flying Fleet's three hits.
 
Marcano allowed just three hits as she tossed her fifth shutout of the season. She retired eight-straight hitters during two different occasions in the game.
 
Samantha Schmidt (1-6) suffered the loss for Erskine. Schmidt allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.
 
The Saints will head back to the Palmetto State to face the University of South Carolina Aiken on Tuesday (March 14) at 3 p.m.
