SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Mackenzie Conley's RBI double in the sixth inning lifted Flagler College to a 6-5 win against Newberry College during the first game on Saturday at Tyger River Park during the Mid-South Classic. She had an RBI double in the second game against Catawba College and
Ally Marcano tossed a shutout to earn a 2-0 victory.
Flagler is 3-0 during the tournament and improved its overall record to 11-8. Newberry is 10-5 overall and Catawba owns a 5-14 mark.
Alli-Ann Bigale scored on Conley's double against Newberry after she singled in front of her.
The Saints plated two in the first behind a run-scoring single by Bigale and a groundout by
Maddy Murphy, but the Wolves answered with three runs in third. Hailey Drawe and Rachel Marion each drove in a run on an infield single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
Bigale tied the contest at 3-all in the fourth after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Flagler and Newberry traded two-run frames in the fifth.
Garland Evans sent
Genevieve Mangini home on a groundout and
Maria Kappos gave the Saints a 5-3 lead on a double. Allison Van Atta picked up an RBI on a single for the Wolves in the home half.
Garland Evans tallied two base hits during the contest.
Marcano (8-1) earned the win after tossing 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. She gave up two hits and allowed an inherited runner to score.
Katelynn Smith threw 2.1 innings as the starter surrendering three runs on four hits.
Callie Reed hurled 2.1 innings in relief of Smith. The Wolves scored two runs on a hit against her.
Emily Marchbanks (3-3) suffered the loss for Newberry allowing the game-winning run during her two innings in relief of starting pitcher Devon Morrison. Morrison allowed five runs on seven hits through five innings.
A pair of extra-base hits in the first inning against Catawba put Flagler up 2-0. Conley doubled home Bigale and then scored on a triple by
Maddy Murphy for all the offense Flagler needed.
Marcano (9-1) won her second game of the day holding the Catawba Indians scoreless on eight hits. The freshman did not allow a walk and fanned three. Marcano's biggest test came in the sixth when Catawba loaded the bases with one out. Monica Taylor flew out to left and Kaylee Cook popped out to third to end the threat.
Cook (1-6) took the loss for the Catawba Indians. She allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings.
Bigale enjoyed a four-hit day, picking up a pair in both contests. She also scored three times. Conley and
Maddy Murphy each had two hits against Catawba.
Flagler will face No. 12 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Lenoir-Rhyne University tomorrow (Feb. 26) at 10 a.m. and Limestone College at 12 p.m. during the final day of the Mid-South Classic.
