SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Flagler College softball team lost a pair of games today at the Mid-South Classic on Sunday. No. 12 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Lenoir-Rhyne won the opener 2-0 and Limestone College defeated Flagler 6-2 at Tyger River Park.
Flagler leaves with an overall record of 11-10 and the Saints went 3-2 at the three-day tournament.
In the opener, the Saints ran into Lenoir-Rhyne's Brandi Parks (8-0) who tossed a six-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out six. Parks retired 10 Flagler hitters on fly outs and four more on ground outs.
Sarah Kenley broke up the scoreless tie with a ground-rule double which scored Christina Walker from third base.
Kenley hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Six different Saints had one hit.
Garland Evans led off the fifth inning with a triple to the right-center field gap, but was stranded.
Ally Marcano (9-2) went the distance, scattered nine hits and allowed two runs. She struck out six and walked one.
In the second game, Limestone scored all six of its runs in the last three innings to rally past Flagler.
Flagler scored a run in the fourth inning with the help of a Limestone error to take a 1-0 lead.
After allowing two runs to Limestone in the fifth, Flagler answered with a run of its own as
Whitney Woodard socked an RBI-double to center field to tie the game up.
But Emma Swearingen belted a three-run home run to left field to put Limestone up 5-2. They added a run in the seventh.
Swearingen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Bailie Maybry collected two singles and scored a run while Marissa Lineberry went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth.
Josie Weber (6-1) scattered six hits and allowed two runs to score. She struck out seven and walked two.
Samantha Hays (1-1) took the loss in relief for Flagler. She tossed two innings, allowed six hits and four runs.
Callie Reed started and tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowed three hits and two runs. She fanned four batters.
Katelynn Smith finished the game.
Up next for the Saints is No. 6 Valdosta State University on Wednesday (March 1) at 4 p.m. at Flagler Field.
