ST. AUGUSTINE –
Alli-Ann Bigale drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning against Wingate University propelling Flagler College to a 2-1 win in its first game on Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field. Flagler fell to Palm Beach Atlantic University, 6-3, in the final game of the Flagler Classic.
Flagler owns an 8-8 overall record. Wingate fell to 5-9 overall. Palm Beach Atlantic finished the weekend with a 7-6 overall mark. Palm Beach Atlantic defeated Wingate 2-0 in between Flagler's games.
Bigale pushed a bunt past Wingate's pitcher, Aubrey Reep (4-4), sending
Whitney Woodard home for the game-winning run from second base. Woodard was placed on second to open the frame per extra-inning rules in tournament play.
The Saints opened the day by taking a 1-0 advantage in the fourth against the Bulldogs.
Morgan Murphy singled to right and scored on a hit by
Garland Evans.
Wingate evened the score with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when Mary Claire Coyne smacked a homer to left field forcing extra innings.
Ally Marcano (6-1) won her sixth-straight decision in the circle allowing just one run on six hits over eight innings of work. She fanned 13 batters. Marcano retired the last eight-of-the-10 batters she faced.
Reep took the loss for Wingate allowing the game-winning run in the eighth. She allowed one run through her one-plus innings of work out of the bullpen.
Maddy Murphy put the Saints in front of the Sailfish in the first inning of the second game. Woodard led the frame off with a double to left field and came in to score on
Maddy Murphy's single to right.
Bigale drove in
Morgan Murphy in the second after getting hit by a pitch to extend the lead to 2-0, but Palm Beach Atlantic tied the contest in the fourth when Shelby Wood blasted a homer and pinch-hitter Brianna Skipper drove a run in on a sacrifice fly. The Sailfish plated two more in the sixth and an additional tally in the sixth and seventh to secure a 6-3 win.
Natalie Murphy doubled in the sixth and scored on a single by
Garland Evans for the Saints third run. Maddy and
Natalie Murphy each collected two hits in the game accounting for four of the team's eight hits.
Callie Reed (0-2) suffered the loss for Flagler allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits over five innings.
Ashton Adkins (4-1) went the distance and earned the win for the Sailfish. She surrendered three runs on eight hits.
Kayla Knight went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. Maddie Bertisch also went 3-for-4 with a double and she scored two runs.Magnolia West singled twice and scored two runs.
The Saints will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina for the Mid-South Classic next weekend. Flagler will face Barton College on Friday (Feb. 24) at 6 p.m. to open the tournament.
