Marcano fans 15 in win over PBA

ST. AUGUSTINE – Ally Marcano tied a school record with 15 strikeouts to help lead Flagler College to a 6-1 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University in the second game of the Flagler Classic on Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field. Flagler fell victim to the long ball during the first game in a 5-2 loss to Wingate University.
 
The Saints own a 7-7 overall record. Wingate is now 5-7 and Palm Beach Atlantic advanced its record to 5-6. The Sailfish defeated the Bulldogs 5-4 in eight innings during the last game of the day.
 
Marcano (5-1) limited the Sailfish to just one hit. She has struck out at least nine batters during her last three starts and has not allowed more than three hits in any of her last four starts. Through the first three innings, eight of the first nine outs was a strikeout.
 
Natalie Murphy drove two runs in on a single to right field to erase a 1-0 deficit. The Saints executed a double-steal as Natalie Murphy stole second and Alli-Ann Bigale stole home.
 
Natalie Murphy picked up her third RBI of the game in the third on another single to right. The Saints plated two more in the fourth with the help of an error and an RBI single by Mackenzie Conley.
 
Conley, Maddy Murphy, and Natalie Murphy each had two hits as the Saints outhit the Sailfish, 10-1.
 
Nikki Brinegar (2-3) suffered the loss for Palm Beach Atlantic. She allowed six runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings. Claudia Pizzarelli hit an infield single in the third inning.
 
Wingate jumped on Flagler early in the opening game of the tournament with a run aided by an error in the first.

The Bulldogs scored again on Katie McLaurin's home run in the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs plated two more in the third on a two-run shot to left by Mary Claire Coyne and added an insurance run in the sixth on McLaurin's second homer of the game.

Coyne went 3-for-4 with th home run and two runs batted in.
 
Bigale blasted a home run to left in the seventh to bring the Saints to within 5-2 of the Bulldogs, but that is close as they would get.
 
Aubrey Reep (4-2) surrendered two runs on three hits in seven innings for Wingate.

Katelynn Smith (2-5) surrendered two runs over two innings to pickup the loss. Callie Reed allowed three run on three hits over five innings out of the bullpen.

Morgan Murpy, Conley and Bigale each hit a single.
 
Flagler opens the second and final day of the Flagler Classic at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning (Feb. 19) against Wingate and closes out the tournament at 2 p.m. against Palm Beach Atlantic.
