Braves rally late to edge Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE – The University of North Carolina Pembroke closed the game on a 19-4 run to dissolve an 11-point Flagler College lead and come away with a 97-93 win Saturday afternoon on "Bo Clark Day" at Flagler Gymnasium.

UNC Pembroke extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 20-7 overall and 13-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 9-16 overall and 3-15 in conference play.

Before the game, Flagler payed tribute to its head coach of 31 years – Bo Clark – who announced his retirement last month. In the pre-game festivities, it was unveiled that the court will forever bear the name – "The Clark Family Court." There were scores of former players, student managers and student assistant coaches on hand too.

A Jeffercy Jean transition layup gave Flagler an 89-78 lead with 3:46 remaining in regulation. Later, Jean made the second of two free throws and the Saints held a 90-83 with 2:06 to go. Then the Braves scored the next 13 points in a row. They took the lead (91-90) on a Brandon Watts dunk with 1:14 left.

Watts finished with a team-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. He added five rebounds. Akia Pruitt added 15 points, 12 of those coming in the second half. He grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Mike smith came off the bench to provide 14 points while Nigel Grant tallied 11.

The Braves finished the game shooting at a 54.8 percent clip which included a 58.1 percent mark in the second half.

Vaughn McCall scored a career-high 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. He sank five 3-pointers. Jean finished with a career-high 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. Cortlin Davis supplied 14 points while Kessler Bell tallied 11 points coming off the bench. Chris Williams grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Flagler shot 50.8 percent from the field and a season-best 52.4 percent from 3-point range. The Saints sank 11 treys.

Flagler wraps-up its season on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at home against Armstrong State University at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
