Saints split a pair of one-run games

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College topped Newberry College, 3-2, on a game-ending wild pitch during its first game on Sunday afternoon. Flagler dropped the second contest, 1-0, to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the final game of the South/Southeast Region Crossover at Flagler Field. Newberry edged Embry-Riddle, 2-1, in between the Flagler games.  

The Saints move to 5-5 on the season.
 
The Saints scored the game-winner in the eighth when Maddy Murphy scored on two consecutive wild pitches. Maddy Murphy was placed on second base at the beginning of the frame per extra-inning rules during tournament play.
 
Mackenzie Conley's power provided the first two runs for Flagler in the first. Whitney Woodard led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base. Conley blasted her fourth homer of the season to left-center to drive Woodard home.
 
Ally Marcano (3-1) won her third consecutive game and held Newberry scoreless through her first five innings. She allowed two runs on three hits over eight innings of work. Marcano stuck out nine hitters.
 
Devon Morrison (2-1) suffered the loss for Newberry allowing the game-winning run. She threw 2 2/3 innings in relief. .

Christina Linton socked a two-run home in the top of the sixth which forced extra innings.
 
Illona Andringa (2-2) tossed a complete-game shutout for Embry-Riddle against Flagler allowing just one hit.
 
Kassidy Simmons drove in the only run of the game, in the third inning, on a single after Maggie Scott tripled to lead off the frame for the Eagles.
 
Whitney Woodard tallied the lone hit for the Saints.
 
Katelynn Smith (2-3) took the loss as she only surrendered one run on six hits. She also struck out four.
 
Flagler will travel to St. Petersburg, Florida to face Eckerd College this Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 4 p.m.
