Flagler sweeps pair on day one of crossover tourney

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College opened the first day of the South/Southeast Region Crossover with a pair of wins on Friday at Flagler Field. Flagler won both games by the score of 5-0 as it defeated Florida Southern first and then the University of Tampa.

Flagler evened its record for the season at 4-4. Florida Southern dropped to 2-2 while Tampa (3-1) suffered its first loss.

In the other two games, Florida Southern shut out Georgia Southwestern 8-0, and Tampa blanked Georgia Southwestern, 7-0.

In the opener, Whitney Woodard hit a run-scoring double in the fourth inning to break-up the scoreless tie and then Morgan Murphy, the next batter, hit an RBI single to center to stake the Saints to a 2-0 lead.

Morgan Murphy hit a two-run home run to left-center in the sixth for some insurance.

Ally Marcano (2-1) tossed a two-hit shutout and fanned six. She retired 10 batters in a row in the middle innings.

Morgan Murphy paced the 10-hit attack going 2-for-3 with the home run and three runs batted in. Her sister, Maddy, collected two singles and drove in a run. Garland Evans went 2-for-3 with a double and she scored a run.

Kristen Beacham (1-1) took the loss in the circle for the Moccasins. She tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowed nine hits and four earned runs. Beacham also issued five walks.

Erin Morrissey and Ashlyn Worcester each hit a single.

In the second game, Mackenzie Conley hit a solo home run to open the fourth inning and that would be all of the offense Katelynn Smith (2-2) would need.

Smith tossed a three-hit shutout and fanned six batters. She retired the first 12-of-14 batters she faced.

Flagler added some insurance in the fifth. Maddy Murphy hit a two-run single to left field and two batters later, Alli-Ann Bigale socked a two-run double to the gap in left-center.

Conley went 2-for-3 with the home run while Natalie Murphy collected two singles and scored a run. Bigale went 2-for-2 with the double and two RBI.

Makaleigh Dooley (2-2) allowed eight hits and five runs, but did strike out six batters as she went the distance.

Bre Setree, Maddie Farrell and Jennie Sitton each hit a single for the Spartans.

Flagler will rest up tomorrow and then return to the field on Sunday at 11 a.m. and face Newberry College. The Saints wrap up the day against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Field.
