PEMBROKE, N.C. – Flagler College took a 34-31 lead into the half but shot an ice cold 25.7 percent in the second half and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke rallied for an 82-62 win in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Lumbee Bank Court.
UNC Pembroke snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 9-11 overall and 3-10 in conference play.
The Braves used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to pull away from Saints. A
Chris Williams dunk pulled Flagler to within three (46-43) with 14:09 to go in the game. James Murray-Boyles made a layup in the paint with 13:37 left to ignite the run. Nigel Grant capped the run with two free throws with 8:55 remaining. Carson Mounce accounted for six of the Braves' 16 points in that stretch.
After making 13-of-32 from the field in the first half (40.6%), the Saints only made 9-of-35 in the second half.
Brandon Watts led UNCP with 14 points and he added eight rebounds. Akia Pruitt recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. He blocked three shots as well. Grant added 12 points and six rebounds while Murray-Boyles finished with 10 points. Quamain Rose chipped in with nine points and six assists.
The Braves dominated the post as they out-rebounded the Saints 56-37 and they scored 29 second chance points. UNCP also out-scored Flagler 40-18 in the paint. UNC Pembroke took advantage at the charity stripe as it knocked down 19-of-22 free throws (86.4%).
Jeffercy Jean scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first half for the Saints. He added five assists and four rebounds to his line.
Vaughn McCall and
Ben Bobbitt added 14 and 10 points, respectively. Williams just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Flagler returns home for a key PBC divisional game on Saturday (Feb. 4) against Lander University at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
