ST. AUGUSTINE –
Taja Valmyr recorded a team-high 19 kills and added 15 digs for her 16
th double-double of the season as top-seed Flagler College held off No. 4 seed Anderson University 3-2 (25-16, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13) to advance to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional final, which will be held tomorrow (Dec. 2) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to 21 matches and improved to 26-3. The Saints will play for its first regional title since 2011 when they defeated Wingate University, 3-2, to advance to the national championships in California. Tomorrow's regional final matches the same two teams as Wingate advanced with a 3-1 win over Georgia College. Anderson University dropped to 28-5. The Trojans closed the season winning 23 of their last 25 matches.
The match between Flagler and Anderson featured 34 ties and 20 lead changes. In the fifth set alone, there were seven ties and six lead changes.
Anderson took a 13-12 lead in the fifth set when Marissa Mitter was awarded a kill after Flagler's
Sara Davis was called for a blocking error. On the next rally, Davis atoned for her mistake with a vicious spike.
Karlie Redfern's attack attempt found open ground to give Flagler match point.
Rachel Porada finished the match with an ace.
Davis finished with 16 kills, seven total blocks and had two aces. Redfern recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 10 kills and 15 digs. She added four total blocks and three aces.
Tara Savisky notched her 10
th double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs.
Raquel Kulak contributed seven kills and six total blocks.
Kayla Norelli corralled 21 digs.
Mitter led the Trojans with 22 kills and 15 digs. Rachel Burts added 16 kills and hit an efficient .444. Emily Conlin recorded a double-double with 57 assists and 12 digs. Emily Conrad collected a match-high 27 digs.
NOTE: Flagler has won all seven matches this season that have gone five sets…Wingate, including the two matches in this regional, has a 6-0 record at Flagler Gym…The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 6-3, however the Saints are 2-1 in regional finals, all at Wingate.
