ST. AUGUSTINE –
Damerit Brown scored 20 of his season-high 27 points in the second half as Flagler College held off Saint Leo University 75-70 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 3-1 while Saint Leo had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to an even 4-4.
Brown added 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. He was 7-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Brown sank all nine of his free throws.
Vaughn McCall added 18 points while
Chris Williams recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Cortlin Davis tallied a game-high six assists and added 11 rebounds as well as two blocked shots.
Flagler dominated the boards as it out-rebounded Saint Leo 50-31.
Drago Popovic led the Lions with 19 points, 15 of those coming in the second half. Isaiah Hill added 15 points, five assists and five rebounds. Tyreece Brice tacked on 12 points and he grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Lions came into the game averaging 35.2 percent from 3-point range, but could only make one trey on 22 attempts, an average of 4.5 percent. Saint Leo was able to score 23 points off 19 Flagler turnovers.
The Saints closed the first half on a 15-6 run and took a 31-21 lead at the break.
The lead swelled to as many as 15 (36-21) early in the second half
Saint Leo narrowed the margin to three (73-70) with 21 seconds left, but a layup by Williams with seven seconds remaining put the game away.
Flagler never trailed in the game.
The Saints will break for the Thanksgiving holiday and return to the court on Dec. 2 in the Peach Belt Conference opener at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia.
