Vaughn McCall and
Damerit Brown combined to score 43 points to help Flagler College to a 78-69 win over Paine College in a men's basketball game in the L.S. Epps Tournament Saturday afternoon at Epps Gymnasium.
Flagler raised its record to 2-1. Paine, a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, fell to 1-4.
McCall scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, and he dished out six assists. McCall sank 8-of-12 free throws. Brown added 20 points and sank five 3-pointers. He corralled nine rebounds.
Cortlin Davis chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Babe Murphy led the Lions with 18 points and six rebounds. Deshawndric Nelms added 14 points and five rebounds. Johnnie Robinson III tacked on 11 points.
The two teams went to the locker rooms tied at 33-all, but Flagler shot a sizzling 52.4 percent (11-21) from the field in second half.
Flagler used a 13-4 run early in the second half to break up a 37-all tie. Brown started the spurt with a pair of free throws and then capped it with a 3-pointer. Paine would get as close as three points the rest of the way.
The Lions sank all 15 of their free throw attempts.
The Saints corralled 12 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second chance points.
Flagler hosts Saint Leo University on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium on "St. Johns County School Night."
