ST. AUGUSTINE –
Charlene Nowotny scored a goal and added an assist as No. 5 Flagler College (United Soccer Coaches Top 25) edged Georgia College 3-2 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match at Saints Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints improved their overall record to 10-0-1 and their conference mark to 5-0-1. This is the first time a Flagler team has won 10 matches in a season since the 2007 season (10-9-1). The Bobcats fell to 5-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the Peach Belt.
Fio Fustagno scored her ninth of the season before the half and Nowotny cushioned the lead to 3-1 when she sent a free kick from five yards outside the penalty box into the net. Nowotny took a game-high five shots, four of which were on goal, and has nine goals this year.
Abby Austin opened the scoring with a goal in the 14
th minute on a pass from Nowotny, but Amanda Bartholomew notched the equalizer five minutes later.
Becca Morris brought the Bobcats to within one when she sent a corner kick curling into the goal.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel grabbed the ball after a bounce, but caught the ball just behind the goal line.
After making one save in the first half, Ashlee Graham made five stops in the final 45 minutes for Georgia College as Flagler rattled off 12 shots. Dubel made a save in the first half, but only saw four shots after halftime.
Flagler will hit the road to face the University of North Carolina Pembroke in a pivotal Peach Belt Conference match on Wednesday (Oct. 11) at 11 a.m.
