Nowotny’s golden goal sends No. 18 Flagler to the semifinals

ST. AUGUSTINE – Charlene Nowotny scored the only goal of the match, in the 96th minute, to send No. 18 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College to the semifinals with a victory over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday night at Saints Field.

Flagler, the No. 3 seed, won its school-record 15th match and improved to 15-1-2 overall. The Saints will take on No. 10 Columbus State University at 2 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 3) at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Georgia. Young Harris ends its season at 9-6-1. The Mountain Lions have lost four matches by one goal.

With 5:04 left to go in the first overtime, Flagler was on the attack, but a Young Harris defender cleared the ball out of bounds. The throw-in went to Fio Fustagno near the right edge of the goal box, near the end line. She pivoted around the defender and saw a charging Nowotny who took the touch pass and tucked the ball under the crossbar.

The Saints had a goal in the 79th minute nullified for being offside.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded her seventh shutout of the season, and third in a row. She saved two shots. Nicole Medeiros recorded five saves for the Mountain Lions.

Flagler out-shot Young Harris 15-9 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 31 fouls were called with Flagler being called for 16.

NOTE: The first overtime match played in the PBC Tournament quarterfinal round since 2015 when Armstrong State defeated Clayton State, 3-2 (OT)…Flagler was 0-4 in its previous PBC quarterfinal appearances, all on the road.
