ST. AUGUSTINE – Charlene Nowotny scored the only goal of the match, in the 96
th minute, to send No. 18 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College to the semifinals with a victory over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday night at Saints Field.
Flagler, the No. 3 seed, won its school-record 15
th match and improved to 15-1-2 overall. The Saints will take on No. 10 Columbus State University at 2 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 3) at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Georgia. Young Harris ends its season at 9-6-1. The Mountain Lions have lost four matches by one goal.
With 5:04 left to go in the first overtime, Flagler was on the attack, but a Young Harris defender cleared the ball out of bounds. The throw-in went to Fio Fustagno near the right edge of the goal box, near the end line. She pivoted around the defender and saw a charging Nowotny who took the touch pass and tucked the ball under the crossbar.
The Saints had a goal in the 79
th minute nullified for being offside.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded her seventh shutout of the season, and third in a row. She saved two shots. Nicole Medeiros recorded five saves for the Mountain Lions.
Flagler out-shot Young Harris 15-9 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 31 fouls were called with Flagler being called for 16.
NOTE: The first overtime match played in the PBC Tournament quarterfinal round since 2015 when Armstrong State defeated Clayton State, 3-2 (OT)…Flagler was 0-4 in its previous PBC quarterfinal appearances, all on the road.
