Saints hold off pesky Bobcats in five

Valmyr records 1,000th kill

ST. AUGUSTINE – Sara Davis tied her season-high with 20 kills while Taja Valmyr added 19 more, including her 1,000th career kill, as Flagler College held off Georgia College 3-2 (25-23, 25-16, 14-25, 21-25, 17-15) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler extended its winning streak to 10 matches and improved to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College had its five-match winning streak snapped as it fell to 14-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Davis finished with a .462 hitting percentage as she had two errors on 39 swings. Valmyr recorded her team-high 10th double-double of the season with 14 digs to go along with her 19 kills. She became the 10th member of the 1,000-kill club late in the second set.

Karlie Redfern added 18 kills and nine digs. Tara Savisky was one assist shy of tying her career-best as she tallied 59 assists. Kayla Norelli collected a match-high 23 digs. Jordan Taylor added five total blocks and Regan Swift tacked on four more.

The Saints recorded the most kills, as a team, this season with 72 and tallied the most assists with 65. The 10.0 total team blocks was second only to the 12.0 they recorded at Augusta University.

Libby Bochniak recorded a double-double for the Bobcats with 14 kills and 11 digs. Bartram Trail High product Ebony Powers added 13 kills and 14 digs. Taylor Svehla chipped in with 12 kills and three total blocks. Chandler Ewaldsen collected 22 digs while Kayla Brockway notched a double-double with 48 assists and 13 digs.

Flagler took the first two sets and cruised in the second, 25-16. Georgia College rolled in the third set behind a .429 hitting percentage and then rallied back in the fourth set to force the deciding set. The Bobcats trailed in the fourth 8-3 early and then was down 20-16. Georgia College finished on a 9-1 run.

Flagler had won its four previous five-set matches, but this one was going to be earned by hard work. There were eight ties and six lead changes in the set. The biggest lead any team had was three points (6-3 by Georgia College). Armstrong State University transfer Emily Crowell came off the bench for a kill to give the Bobcats match point (14-13). A timeout by Flagler led to a kill by Davis, and then an ace by Rachel Porada put the Saints ahead 15-14. However, a kill by Emma Boughner knotted the score again (15-15), but Davis and Valmyr ended the match with consecutive kills.

Flagler will venture out on the road next weekend. The Saints visit PBC leader USC Aiken on Friday (Oct. 27) and will go to Erskine College on Saturday (Oct. 28).

NOTE: During the break between sets two and three, Flagler honored the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Florida Sun Conference championship team.
