COLUMBUS, Ga. –
Sara Davis and
Megan Hooks supplied 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to help rally Flagler College to a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 14-25, 26-24, 16-14) win over Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
Flagler extended its winning streak to three matches and improved to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. The road victory was the first of the season for the Saints (1-2). Columbus State fell to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Davis finished the match hitting at a .270 clip with five errors on 37 swings. She racked up four total blocks. Hooks hit .261 with two errors on 46 swings and she added two solo blocks.
Ashley Cheewah added nine kills.
Tara Savisky recorded her sixth double-double of the season after tallying a match-high 47 assists and 13 digs.
Kayla Norelli collected a season-high 31 digs.
Mary McCarty led the Lady Cougars with a match-high 20 kills and finished with a .306 hitting percentage. She had five errors on 49 swings. Zoemy Barreto Pereira recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. Abby King also posted a double-double with 45 assists and 24 digs. Megan Frame chipped in with nine kills and six total blocks. Caytlin Merritt led the defense with 29 digs.
Columbus State scored four-of-the-last-five points in the first set for a 25-21 win, but Flagler used a 9-3 run midway through the second set, and then withstood a late Columbus State run, for a 25-22 victory.
The Lady Cougars rolled to a 25-14 win in the third set behind McCarty's four kills. Columbus State had five aces in the set.
In the fourth set, Flagler overcame a .300 hitting percentage by Columbus State to win 26-24. The set featured 10 ties and four lead changes. A kill by Pereira gave the Lady Cougars match point (24-23), but the Saints fought it off after Andrea Skipor was called for being in the net on a block attempt. An attack error by Pereira spun the score in favor of the Saints, 25-24. Davis finished the set with a kill. Hooks led the Saints with five kills in that set and she hit .455.
In the final set, coming out of a Flagler timeout, McCarty's serve went out of bounds to give the Saints match point (14-12). But the Saints returned the favor with a service error of their own and Frame added a kill to tie the score at 14-all. Davis and Hooks closed the match with consecutive kills for Flagler. Hooks again had five kills to lead the Saints.
Flagler concludes its first conference road trip with its final appearance at the University of Montevallo tomorrow (Oct. 1) at 2 p.m. Central. The Falcons are joining the Gulf South Conference next year.
